Lula Lake Trail Blazer

First things first! Can you introduce yourself and your organization to our readers?

My name is Cody Roney, and I’m the Executive Director of Lula Lake Land Trust (LLLT) and an avid trail runner. I've been working in the conservation and outdoor recreation field since 2012 and joined the team at LLLT in 2019.

Lula Lake Land Trust is a conservation organization dedicated to preserving critical habitats on Lookout Mountain and expanding outdoor recreation opportunities. We own and manage over 4,000 acres and have built more than 80 miles of trails used for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. Our trail systems include key portions of the River to Clouds Route and beloved areas like the Durham Mine Trails, Moonshine Trails, and Core Preserve trails. We're proud to be a local leader in both land stewardship and outdoor recreation.

What about the Lula Lake Trailblazer? What was the inspiration behind this event and how does it help you all accomplish your mission?

For many years LLLT has partnered with local race directors to utilize our trail systems for races. Our team had dreamed of creating our own signature race one day as something that could serve as both a major fundraiser and a celebration of our mission. When the pandemic slowed things down, we finally had the time and space to bring that vision to life.

Now in its fourth year, the Trailblazer has become one of our top fundraising events. It’s more than just a race; it’s a powerful way for us to share our incredible trail systems with the broader community, while building deeper connections and fostering a sense of pride in the land we’re working to protect.
The proceeds from the Trailblazer go directly back into maintaining our 40+ miles of trails. Trail maintenance is a continuous, labor-intensive effort, and the Trailblazer provides crucial funding to help us keep these trails safe, sustainable, and enjoyable for everyone who visits.

How long have you all been putting this event on?

This is the 5th year of the Trailblazer race.

Can you give us some details -- where and when is the race? Is there anything unique about it that runners (and their crew!) should know?

The 2025 Lula Lake Trailblazer will take place on Saturday, November 8 at Lula Lake Land Trust on Lookout Mountain. This race truly has something for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned ultrarunner or just getting started. We offer a 10k, half marathon, 50k, a fun and lively beer mile, and even a ~1-mile kids fun-run to get the whole family involved.

What sets the Trailblazer apart is how inclusive and welcoming it is. Whether it’s your first race or your fiftieth, we want you to feel at home. Our courses are clearly marked, we offer generous cutoff times, and our aid stations are well-stocked to keep you fueled and supported. **Bonus, the trails showcase some of the most breathtaking scenery in the region! You'll experience the beauty of waterfalls, overlooks, and forested ridgelines all in one race.

Spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer! There are various viewing spots for all distances, so friends and family can see their runners in action. While you wait, enjoy live music, food, and the community vibe that makes Trailblazer more than just a race.

Beyond the event, how can people get involved or connected with the Lula Lake Land Trust?
